{"id":19,"date":"2006-05-10T02:05:46","date_gmt":"2006-05-10T09:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.designer-notes.com\/?p=19"},"modified":"2006-05-10T02:05:46","modified_gmt":"2006-05-10T09:05:46","slug":"whither-gen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.designer-notes.com\/whither-gen\/","title":{"rendered":"Whither Gen?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One cringe-worthy phrase which will be ever-present at this year\u2019s E3 is \u201cnext-gen\u201d &#8211; as in, \u201cthat title is truly \u2018next-gen\u2019\u201d or \u201cthose graphics just aren\u2019t \u2018next-gen\u2019 enough\u201d or \u201cdoes it really have \u2018next-gen\u2019 gameplay?\u201d The assumption, of course, is that there is something so fundamentally different about the new wave of consoles that our games will need to take entirely new shapes or forms in order to succeed. This assumption is just not true.<\/p>\n<p>Let me ask this question \u2013 what new types of gameplay emerged in the last generation? What were the great games from the Xbox and PS2 generation that changed our gaming landscape forever? There was just as much talk back in 2000 about the \u201cnext generation\u201d of consoles and how much games would be changing. Remember Sony\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/archives.cnn.com\/2000\/TECH\/computing\/02\/01\/emotion.engine.idg\/\">Emotion  Engine<\/a>?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Certainly, significant improvements were made in the previous generation, but I am at a loss to describe any sort of \u201cnext-gen\u201d gameplay that defines it. The open-ended world of the <em>GTA<\/em> series is certainly inspiring, but it seems more an important exception than anything else. Online play has finally started to come of age, of course, but PC gaming has always been the leader here. Thus, if there is \u201cnext-gen\u201d multiplayer gameplay coming to consoles, you should already see be able to see it on the PC.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, was there actually revolutionary change over the last five years? If not, should we expect it in the next five?<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t. I see people still playing games in their living rooms, sitting on their same old couches 10 feet from the TV, holding the same old controllers they have since 1995. (Of course, Nintendo is an important exception &#8211; but when one hears the phrase \u201cnext-gen,\u201d this is not what it refers to\u2026) Sure, the TV\u2019s might be in high-def now, but this is simply the same promise of every other generation: better graphics.<\/p>\n<p>If the games are going to change in some fundamental way, why haven\u2019t they changed already? If a programmer can imagine the gameplay working with the current inputs and outputs (controllers and screens), there is always a way to make it work. It boggles my mind that Sid was able to squeeze Civ onto an early-90s PC, but he did. The human mind hasn\u2019t changed one bit since \u201cPong\u201d &#8211; so if the consoles aren\u2019t changing fundamentally, why should we expect the games to?<\/p>\n<p>Which reminds me\u2026 I really need to post soon about why I love my Nintendo DS. Different console.
